Artificial Grass – Creating play spaces in your backyard for the whole family

Artificial Grass – Creating play spaces in your backyard for the whole family

Why have a backyard if you aren’t going to enjoy it? Sure, you want a good-looking garden so your view out the window is always a treat, but outdoor play time is fundamental to our South African lifestyle. And once you replace your natural grass lawn with artificial grass, you’ll have a lot more time to get outside and have fun.

Artificial grass is so versatile, it can help you design specialized play spaces for every member of your family. Here are just a few suggestions . . .

The Perfect Putting Green

Backyard putting greens used to be a luxury only a few folks could afford. Thanks to advanced varieties of artificial grass, it’s a lot more affordable to design and install a putting green that fits your space and your skill level to a tee. (Yep, we even have a golf turf just right for a backyard tee box, so you can practice your big swings as well as your short game.)

Not into golf? You could install a backyard bowling green or cricket net instead. Fun for all ages.

Happy Kidspace

What’s more fun than hiking over to the grade school to play on the swings and other outdoor equipment? Inviting your young friends over to play on your very own backyard playset. Creating a just-for-kids play space at home means fewer worries about your child’s safety when they’re out and about.

And speaking of safety, when you install artificial grass as “flooring” under your child’s playset, you’ll be increasing their safety even more. That’s because we can install your grass with our latest technology, which reduces risk of injury from falls.

Fun Dogspace

Four-legged family members want to get in on all the backyard action, too. But dog owners have to contend with some extra considerations when it comes to grass. Fortunately, artificial grass from Perfect Grass is the ultimate in dog-friendly. So many of our customers are pet owners (or owners of professional dog-related businesses), we have artificial grass designed specifically for dogs.

It’s tough as dog nails, dig-proof, quick and simple to keep clean, and fends off odors. We have artificial grass for lawns where dogs will play with the rest of the family.

Sunny Poolside

Nothing says backyard play like a pool. And nothing makes the space around your pool soft, cool, and slip-proof like artificial grass. Surrounding your pool with artificial grass instead of concrete is a lot prettier, too.

Less maintenance means more play

Frankly, escaping from lawn maintenance is one of the two main reasons home owners switch to artificial grass. Yes, you will save thousands of litre of precious water, and that’s a huge plus for our environment and your household budget. But, even the most avid gardener isn’t keen on all that mowing, etc. required to tend natural grass. Even if you kick back and do nothing in your backyard, at least you’re doing that because you want to, right?

Nonetheless, although you can do nearly anything on or around your artificial grass, there are a few things you should avoid doing. With those few simple cautions in mind, you and your family will be ready to get outside and make the most of the play spaces you’ve created in your backyard.

Get your soccer fields ready for summer with artificial grass

Get your soccer fields ready for summer with artificial grass

Artificial grass was first designed for use in sport and has seen great improvements in its design and functionality since its inception in the 1960’s.

When it comes to soccer, the use of sand-filled artificial grass systems continued to raise questions in terms of its suitability for the sport, until more recently, when third-generation systems which include both sand and rubber granule infill, became available in the 1990’s.

It was with the advent of the third-generation artificial grass systems that FIFA recognised the potential of artificial grass for the further development of soccer.

In order to ensure that artificial grass used for the sport is be able to offer all the benefits that FIFA seeks, the organisation maintains the FIFA Quality Programme. Only artificial grass products that have undergone stringent FIFA approved testing can be called football turf.

For most schools and small clubs, FIFA approved turf may not be entirely necessary, however for large soccer stadiums or practice venues where international teams are likely to compete and practice, FIFA approved artificial grass is mandatory.

Why does FIFA endorse the use of artificial grass in soccer?

Performance: Because the interaction between the player and surface, as well as the ball and surface is a serious consideration, teams are assured that an artificial turf is an outstanding alternative that will enhance practice and play.

Maintenance: Artificial grass is the perfect alternative as weather conditions and location make no difference to the quality of the grass. Artificial grass requires no sunlight which is perfect for indoor facilities. Where natural grass could become scorched from excessive heat or damaged from frost and cold, artificial grass is not affected by extreme weather conditions.

Durability: Provided the soccer pitch is maintained correctly, with artificial turf installed it can withstand substantial use and significantly more hours of play than a pitch with natural turf. Artificial grass will not become worn out after excessive use and provides teams with a consistent quality pitch at all times.

Safety: Polyethylene terephthalate is the plastic used to manufacture artificial grass. Made from carbon and hydrogen, polyethylene is considered safe for exposure to human beings and does not contain properties that are carcinogenic or known to disrupt hormones. In terms of the construction of a pitch using artificial grass, sufficient cushioning prevents injury while the infill used to maintain the grass pile, is today more often produced using safe materials rather than rubber.

Convenience: Teams can, weather and light permitting, play indoors or outdoors and can play at all times and for extended periods on pitches that have been built using artificial grass. This along with all of the other benefits of using artificial grass, makes for the ultimate in convenience for both professional and amateur teams.

But isn’t an artificial turf expensive?

While it does require an initial investment to build a soccer pitch using artificial grass, that outlay very quickly recoups itself as regular maintenance and turf management costs are significantly reduced.

In a country where our varied weather conditions and lack of water make soccer pitch maintenance particularly expensive and challenging, an artificial grass pitch is a cost-effective and highly practical option.

Since many FIFA endorsed international pitches are now built using artificial grass, for any school or club intent on preparing players for the big leagues, an artificial grass pitch provides them with the experience they need to go further in their game.

Artificial Grass – Could Johannesburg be greener with Artificial Grass?

Artificial Grass – Could Johannesburg be greener with Artificial Grass?

The dry, rainless, frosty winter in Johannesburg has always decimated our lawns. This coming summer however, the question is whether we will be able to revive our lawns to the luscious, green expanses we all love. Now more than ever, we ask: Is artificial grass the answer?

The South African Weather Service has predicted a 70% probability of El Niño occurrence from mid Spring into Summer.

El Niño is a climate cycle that is associated with warmer than usual weather. While for Cape Town, El Niño means a dry, hot summer as normal, for Johannesburg, this means hotter than normal temperatures and most importantly – less rain. In addition to ongoing water restrictions, the water insecurity that Johannesburg already faces, will be exacerbated by this weather system.

For the lawns that help to beautify Johannesburg with inviting expanses of green in summer, the drought means that we need to consider other options.

Is artificial grass an environmentally friendly choice?

The fact that natural lawns are a terrible and unnecessary drain on water reserves, is inescapable. What is also true however, is that lawns will always be favoured as both a visually appealing addition to the garden, and an important element of recreation.

When it comes to saving water, artificial grass is a definite win for the environment. As opposed to natural lawn which requires regular watering, artificial grass only needs the occasional hose-down to remove dust.

In addition, lawns have long been considered ‘green deserts’ as they contribute little of value to the environment. While natural grass that has been allowed to grow tall provides food and shelter for small wildlife, a trimmed and manicured lawn does none of that.

Some will argue that artificial grass is made from synthetic and even toxic materials, however, as detailed in a previous post ‘Is Artificial Grass Really Green?’, artificial grass is in fact an environmentally friendly alternative to the real thing.

Is artificial grass an affordable alternative?

The installation of a good quality artificial grass from a reputable, experienced service provider, requires a reasonable initial outlay. With prices between just R 300 and R 500 per square meter for a professionally installed lawn (supplied and fitted) however, the average garden will within the period of a few months to a year, recoup that initial outlay. In addition to saving on the cost of watering and the upkeep of an irrigation system, you can also look forward to saving money on pesticides, fertilisers, top-dressing, a garden service and more!

Greener homes, offices and sports fields.

For home-owners, commercial properties, retail outlets, schools and sports-centres – among other locations that value a neat, green lawn – artificial grass provides the perfect solution to the struggle associated with keeping a natural lawn alive.

Hard wearing and resilient to even the highest foot-traffic, artificial grass can be used extensively with only the simplest maintenance to keep it looking great. Unaffected by weather – be that frost or searing heat – artificial grass stays green all year round.

For people living and working in Johannesburg who look forward to the summer rains and the relief to gardens and lawns that this brings, artificial grass is definitely a viable, long-term solution in the face of the impending drought. It is easy to maintain, environmentally friendly, hard-wearing and cost-effective and can be used anywhere that you would want a beautiful, lush, green lawn.

Perfect Grass has offices in both Johannesburg and Cape Town. If you’re looking for a year-round green lawn, give us a call. Our professional installation team has the knowledge and experience to assist residential and commercial clients no matter the application you require.

Artificial Grass – A Peek into the History and Benefits of Artificial Grass in Sport

Artificial Grass – A Peek into the History and Benefits of Artificial Grass in Sport

Artificial grass was first used for sport in the 1960’s and only became popular as a replacement for natural lawn in landscaping during the 1990’s.

In fact it was in 1966, that AstroTurf – a short-pile artificial grass – was first installed in the then newly-built Astrodome in Houston, Texas in the USA.

Originally, the Astrodome had natural turf installed, but because of the materials used to construct the transparent roof which allowed the grass enough light to grow, the glinting of the sun on the ceiling panels made day-time games difficult. The roof was then painted to try and solve this problem, but ended up reducing the amount of sunlight needed for the grass to grow properly.

In a bid to find a good alternative solution, the stadium owners and a team of product engineers began working on a new, artificial grass playing surface which they eventually name ‘ChemGrass’. It was installed and tested at the Moses Brown School in Rhode Island in 1964 and proved to be a huge success. They later changed the name to ‘AstroTurf and installed it at the Astrodome.

AstroTurf soon took off in popularity and quickly spread to the rest of the United States, followed by Canada and Europe. By the early 1970’s, AstroTurf was being installed in the many closed and domed sports arena’s which had become a trend across the globe.

AstroTurf in its early days was a pretty hard and unforgiving playing surface that wore quickly and resulted in injuries and a reduced quality of game play. It was only after decades of further research and product development that the artificial grass we see today, was developed and started regaining popularity as an sports field turf alternative.

Modern Artificial Grass – the innovations that made the difference

Artificial grass was originally made of polypropylene which made it hard and unyielding. Today however, artificial grass is manufactured using polyethylene. Polyethylene is not only much softer and kinder to the skin, but it is also not known to leach any chemicals that are suspected of causing cancer or disrupting hormones.

The substrate used before laying artificial grass has also improved immensely, resulting in a more cushioned experience and less stress on players joints.

Instead of short, hard blades of grass, the grass blades are now longer and spaced further apart which allows cleats to sink into the surface, just like they do on natural grass.

How Artificial Grass will make your sports field a pleasure

Maintenance: Artificial grass does not require irrigation, mowing, fertilising, top-dressing, scarifying or any other tasks that make natural grass so challenging to keep looking perfect.

Wear and Tear: It is very difficult to keep sports fields that are used regularly looking their best. Natural grass wears quickly and constant use can cause it to die off – particularly in harsher climates. Artificial grass on the other hand is extremely hard-wearing and can be used almost permanently without degrading.

Water-wise: Because artificial grass does not need watering, it is a definite winner in water-scarce regions.

Increased Practice Time: Artificial grass fields can be used for up to 3000 hours per year, whereas natural turf can only be used for around 700 hours per year.

Aesthetics: No matter the weather, artificial grass always looks fresh and green, and lines can be inlaid to ensure the field always looks perfect.

Versatile: Artificial grass fields can be used for a wide range of sports both indoor and outdoor. Some of the more popular South African sports that use artificial grass include soccer, rugby, hockey, athletics, golf and cricket.

Perfect Grass offers the professional installation of sports fields with artificial grass. With offices in both Johannesburg and Cape Town, if you are a school, sports club, university or any other organisation looking for a sports field with artificial grass – give us a call.

Artificial Grass – Will I love it like the real thing?

Artificial Grass – Will I love it like the real thing?

You may still be on the fence about whether or not to install artificial grass in your garden. Perhaps this is because you are unsure as to whether artificial grass will feel plasticky, bristly and uncomfortable.

The good news is that artificial grass has come a very long way in recent years. Vast improvements in the design and production of artificial grass, as well as the materials used to manufacture and install it, have almost eliminated the drawbacks that were traditionally a feature of artificial grass.

The Feel

Many of us love the feel of a beautiful lawn under our feet. So how does artificial grass measure up?

The blades of artificial grass are formed by sending thin nylon or polypropylene sheets through specially designed moulds. This process produces thin blades of grass that have an oval shape and are slightly irregular, which closely resembles natural grass.

Secondly, a filler, which feels very similar to soil, is used keep the blades of grass upright. The result of this is that artificial grass feels genuine underfoot and to the touch.

In short, good quality artificial grass has a soft, comfortable and welcoming feel that mirrors the most beautiful varieties of perfectly maintained, natural grass.

The Smell

DIY artificial grass is made of rubber and other materials that tend to give off unpleasant fumes when exposed to the heat of the sun. Good quality artificial grass however, such as that which we supply at Perfect Grass, has been designed and manufactured using materials that do not smell, even when exposed to high temperatures.

Without proper drainage, hygiene can also be a problem with artificial grass. Urine and water need a means to drain away from the lawn in order to keep it dry and free of stagnant liquid. Besides sanitising your artificial grass from time-to-time, ensuring that you select a professional and reputable artificial grass installer, who will ensure the correct levelling and drainage, is imperative.

The Colour

Artificial grass is often associated with an unnaturally bright, solid colour green lawn. The colour of good quality artificial grass offers the more muted green colours and subtle blade colour variations which closely resemble natural lawn. Depending on the variant you choose, a high-end artificial lawn, such as our Spring Series – 30mm, will even include the light-brown root-level tufting that is found in natural grass.

The Texture

Thanks to the materials used in the manufacture of artificial grass, as well as the filler used to keep the blades of grass upright, artificial grass has the same basic texture, shape and size as natural grass. This means that the grass reacts in the same way as natural grass.

After running on artificial grass, playing on it and so forth, the blades of grass found in a good quality product, bounce back up just as natural grass does.

Some types of artificial grass, such as the range we supply at Perfect Grass, are so well manufactured, that you would need to get down to ground level and inspect the grass very closely to determine whether it is the real deal or not.

But don’t take our word for it! Why not give us a call today and arrange a consultation at no charge to you. We will provide samples of our artificial grass range for you to touch and feel, which is the best way for you to make sure whether artificial grass is the lawn solution you’ve been looking for.

Artificial Grass – Can Artificial Grass be used for Professional Landscaping?

Artificial Grass – Can Artificial Grass be used for Professional Landscaping?

You may be considering a complete revamp of your garden – after all, landscaping not only improves the saleability of your home if you are looking to sell, but also increases its value by up to 15%.

Or, perhaps you are a landscaper considering the possibility of using artificial grass for your next installation?

The move to artificial grass in South Africa has grown exponentially, as our modern climate demands the need to always be aware of our water consumption. Today, water-wise landscaping and gardening is key and artificial grass is becoming increasingly recognised as a viable, long-term alternative to turf for garden designs that seek a lawn area.

Despite this, whether you’re a landscaper or a homeowner seeking to improve your garden, you may still feel that artificial grass, along with ultra-long eyelashes or impossibly tanned skin, looks undeniably and offputtingly cheap and fake. So can you really use artificial grass to landscape your garden?

Great looking artificial grass means quality

Artificial grass has come a very long way in recent years, to the extent that we now have incredibly realistic options available.

From the colour, which is now natural and varied instead of a solid bright green, to soft and ever so slightly irregular textures that mirror genuine turf – some artificial grass is so realistic, that you’d easily mistake it for being completely natural.

Strong chemical odours are also a thing of the past, while the design of the substructure of today’s artificial turf, makes for an extremely pleasing experience.

The challenge lies in finding an artificial grass supplier that is able to deliver the quality options that you need and achieve the look you want.

Companies such as Perfect Grass provide a wide range of premium quality, yet affordable artificial grass options. Take for example our Autumn 30mm artificial grass. This particular option contains no less than three colours, including light, mid and dark green fibres, and has been manufactured to mirror Buffalo grass as closely as possible. You’d be hard-pressed to tell the difference between this product, and the real thing.

A thoughtful landscape design is essential

One of the most fantastic aspects of artificial grass, is that it can be shaped to suit absolutely any garden layout. Landscapers can integrate good quality artificial grass into their garden design to create a completely natural look. Instead of focusing on straight lines, which look unnatural, using flowing contours and the right edging plants, help to create an inviting space that is pleasing to the senses.

Hire a professional artificial grass installer

While an avid gardener or experienced landscaping team may have the skills needed to create a beautiful outdoor space, specific knowledge and know-how is needed to install artificial grass correctly.

For example, the preparation of the surface underneath the area to be grassed, should not only be levelled correctly, but should be removed of debris, rocks, mulch, roots and anything else that could damage the artificial grass. The ‘pile’ of the artificial grass needs to also be considered to ensure a natural look, while seemingly simple matters such as joining each section of grass, needs to be done in the proper manner to ensure a lasting, premium quality outcome.

Work with an artificial grass supplier that understands your needs

A good artificial grass supplier will have the flexibility required to work hand-in-hand with a professional landscaper and an avid gardener. At Perfect Grass, we aim to provide both a product and service that enhances the work that landscapers do, while providing professional advice and assistance that helps clients get the most from their artificial grass for many years to come.

If you are a landscaper or gardener looking for an artificial grass supplier that understands your needs and is a pleasure to work with, then get in touch with us today. One of our consultants will be happy to visit you and advise on the best artificial grass options for your particular needs.

Artificial Grass which today, looks and feels very close to the real thing, provides so many benefits over natural grass, that it has to be the obvious choice for anyone looking for the perfect, property value boosting and practical lawn.

Aesthetics
Artificial Grass always looks great.

A lawn from Artificial Grass has the appeal of perfectly maintained, natural grass throughout all four seasons of the year and under all weather conditions. You will never experience soggy, muddy patches during the rainy season, nor dry, brown grass during the hot or dry seasons of the year. The colour of Artificial Grass remains consistent across the entire expanse of the lawn, including under shaded areas where grass typically does not grow well.

Maintenance
Artificial Grass is so easy to maintain.

Water Savings
Artificial Grass needs zero irrigation.

Not only are we facing constant water restrictions in South Africa, but water is also becoming increasingly pricey. With Artificial Grass there is never the need for irrigation, which typically consumes hundreds of precious litres of water every day. Artificial Grass – How do I maintain my artificial grass?

Artificial Grass – How do I maintain my artificial grass?

One of the most appealing aspects of having artificial grass installed in your garden, is its distinct ease of maintenance. Having said this, what exactly should you do to maintain your artificial grass, and ensure that it gives you maximum years of service?

To keep your artificial grass in tip-top condition, your maintenance routine will involve cleaning. How much cleaning you need to do, depends entirely on what your artificial grass endures on a day-to-day basis. If you were told that you simply need to hose down your lawn occasionally, well, that is not the whole story. A well maintained artificial lawn will require a little more attention than that, albeit quick and simple to care for.

Debris and Dust
Keeping your artificial lawn free of leaves, branches, sand and dust is vital, as a build-up of these will cause blockages in the draining system of the lawn and could result in the pile of the lawn lying flat.

Using a garden blower and a garden vacuum, you will be able to easily keep your artificial lawn looking beautiful. The more regularly you attend to your lawn, the easier it will be to keep clean.

If you don’t have a garden blower and vacuum, you can also use a broom and pan, however we would highly recommend the garden blower and vacuum combination.

Spills and Stains
It’s fairly obvious that strong chemicals, paint and anything hot or flammable should be kept away from your artificial lawn, but what about more common substances that could stain? Coffee, tea, wine, blood, sweet drinks and alcohol are bound to find their way on to your artificial lawn at some point, so how do you clean up spills and stains?

  1. Absorb: Using a towel, paper towel or even cat litter, blot up fresh spills as quickly as possible.
  2. Treat: Using water and some mild detergent such as dishwashing liquid or even better, a biodegradable detergent, gently clean the spillage from your artificial lawn.
  3. Rinse: Thoroughly rinse the detergent and spillage away using cool, clean water.

Pets and Piles
An artificial lawn can be a real boon for pet owners as now, they don’t need to worry about pet messes killing the grass they’ve so meticulously maintained! Hygiene however, remains a concern.

Daily removal of waste is essential and this, in addition to your Four-step Maintenance Mantra below, will keep your lawn looking great. Solid waste is simple. Allow it to dry, after which it can be easily removed. Urine however, can result in smell over time. Male dogs, as well as cats will tend to leave the worst urine smells behind.

For regular urine management, we recommend using a liquid spray product specifically designed to biodegrade organic pet matter. There are a variety of such products on the market, and they are generally environmentally friendly and safe to use around both pets and children.

Traffic from people and pets will over time, result in flattened grass fibres. A simple brush against the pile and cross brushing of the grass fibres from side-to-side using a medium – stiff broom, will bring the pile of your artificial lawn back up again.

We have specialised products for use on artificial grass and we would definitely recommend such products. Be sure to follow the manufacturers instructions to the letter and you will enjoy both a hygienic and beautiful artificial lawn.

Your Four-step Maintenance Mantra
Clean: Remove debris and dust using a garden blower and vacuum, or broom and pan. Attend to any spills and pet waste using biodegradable detergents.
Rinse: Use a hose and cool, clean water, or a pressurised garden spray can if you are living in a water-restricted zone, to rinse dust and pollens from your lawn.
Brush: Using a medium – stiff broom, brush against the pile and across the pile to lift the fibres of your artificial lawn.
Repeat: For an artificial lawn that lasts and lasts, be sure to give it attention every day, or every week at the very least.

A solid quality artificial grass is non-negotiable if you are looking to get a few decades of service from it. At Perfect Grass we have not only sourced a range of premium quality artificial grass options that we ourselves would be happy to invest in for our own premises, but we ensure that you will get the best service from your investment, through our industry leading installation methods.

Golfer’s Paradise – Having an artificial putting green at home

Golfer’s Paradise – Having an artificial putting green at home

A residential putting green is easy to create with Perfect Grass synthetic lawn. It can be as large or small as required and provides a realistic look and the feel of a professional putting green right in your garden. A garden putting green provides a safe place for the entire family – and friends – to learn the basics of golf without having to pay expensive golf course fees and spend hours away from home.

Synthetic Putting Greens are more accepted as artificial grass materials improve. These materials are constantly subjected to rigorous laboratory studies, game tests and simulations so the ball behaviour is similar to that of a natural grass golf course.

In golf, the use of artificial grass becomes more important when installed in the areas that receive most of the use, the coloured materials are favourable since the balls will not get lost.

The versatility and variety of textures, colours and heights are what make the artificial grass an increasingly used product in sports such as golf, football, rugby, handball, etc. It admits and even facilitates the practice of sports every day due the enormous advantages its resistance provides and its low maintenance cost.

The advantages of artificial grass compared to natural grass also applies to gardens, playgrounds and recreational areas in homes, schools, churches, and commercial buildings, whether the grass is placed indoors or exposed to the environment.

Guaranteed Product

The artificial grass when installed by professionals like Perfect Grass  is proven to be a product that will remain in excellent conditions for over ten years and will allow a significant saving in maintenance costs.

Artificial Grass – Creative ways to use artificial grass

Artificial Grass – Creative ways to use artificial grass

Article courtesy of Heavenly Greens

California home owners have learned that artificial grass is the better choice for lawns, for many reasons. But a lot of folks don’t realize how many other ways there are to use artificial grass. Creative ideas range from the surprisingly practical to the truly “out there,” but each idea has its own special appeal.

Artificial grass gives personality to home projects with unexpected color and texture, and it can improve the livability of your home, indoors and out. Best of all, once you’ve switched to grass for your lawn, you have recaptured time and resources you can devote to both beautifying and enjoying your property rather than endlessly tending your lawn.

Artificial grass is easy to cut and install for simple, non-lawn projects. In many cases you can use low-cost artificial turf from a box store. However, if you want something nicer (or more choices in pile thickness and height), consider giving us a call on 021 212 9898. We often have remnants from major installations, so we could have just what you want.

And get this. Artificial grass doesn’t even have to be green.

Now that you know artificial grass is even more versatile than you imagined, and easy to work with, let’s explore how you can use it to express your creative side.

Landscaping Beyond the Lawn

You already know artificial grass is super-durable, designed to look its fluffy best even in your highest-traffic areas. That makes it ideal for creating pathways around your yard or within your flower and veggie gardens. You can lay it out as a continuous straight or curved walkway, or cut the turf into stepping “stones” in any size and shape you like.

Use it to accentuate an intimate seating area, under a bench or a small table and a couple of chairs.

If you have existing concrete pathways or patio areas, you can transform them dramatically by instantly upgrading to grass. That’s right, it’s easy to cover concrete with artificial grass. You can even choose the padding and infill that matches the look and feel you want. Artificial elevates the quality and appearance of upper-level patios and balconies, too. It’s not only prettier than concrete, it’s more comfortable, cooler, drains quickly and efficiently, and requires little effort to stay that way.

That said, hardscapes do have their place in your yard. In fact, they have come on strong in the past couple of years, helping home owners add visual interest and functionality to their landscape. You can use brick, stone, metal, or wood to add fences, low walls, seating, a trellis or gazebo, fire pit, or complete outdoor kitchen. Or stand-alone elements such as a bird bath or statuary.

No need to stop there, either. You can soften the lines of hardscape elements and add color and fragrance around your artificial grass lawn with flowers, small shrubs, and herbs. Plant them in beds, or put them in containers you can rearrange periodically to change up your outdoor look. Herbs and veggies will give you a savory culinary garden, too.

“Temporary Landscaping” on Your Artificial Grass Lawn

Sometimes, you just have to put decorations on your lawn, right? Christmas and other holidays cry out for your own personalized displays. For special occasions such as birthday or graduation parties, starting the party curbside with front yard decorations lets everyone know, “This is the place!” And when Halloween rolls around, you’ll be the neighborhood’s must-visit house if you build a haunted house on your artificial grass lawn.

Artificial grass is a lot more accommodating than natural grass when it comes to this kind of decorating. No worries about rain or dampness, because artificial grass drains far better than the real thing. No puddles or mud to damage your displays (or get your shoes and clothes filthy while you’re setting things up and taking them down).

And no matter the weather or how long your decorations or large-scale displays remain, they can’t kill the grass. If your artificial grass becomes flattened, you can simply re-fluff it using your fingers for tiny spots or a stiff, natural bristle broom for larger areas. Good as new, green as ever, ready for its next grassy assignment.

But here’s the thing. Artificial grass does have one special requirement – you cannot put holes in it. Inflatables and other decorations that use stakes or pegs to hold them in place are not appropriate for your artificial lawn. That’s really no big deal, though, because you can use sandbags or attach “feet” to most items to stabilize them. And if your kids (or your inner child) insist on inflatable decorations, you can always install them in areas other than on your grass.

It’s easy to learn the dos and don’ts of decorating on artificial grass. Once you do, you’re prepared to get creative without concerns about damaging your lawn.

Carpet Where No Grass Has Gone Before

Creative-Ways-To-Use-AG-Int-blog-3Let’s face it. Concrete is just plain ugly whether it’s your aging walkway or patio or it’s an indoor floor. It’s always cold, and it’s unforgivingly hard. In many homes, concrete floors in basements tend to encourage dampness that encourages growth of mold or mildew in traditional carpet, no matter how you try to remedy the situation. Forget that! Carpet your unattractive, annoying indoor floors with artificial grass instead.

A number of fitness centers and gyms have opted for indoor grass to boost the aesthetic atmosphere of their facilities. You can do the same thing at home.

Artificial grass is soft and warm underfoot, like traditional carpet. It’s also very affordable and extremely long-lasting. Unlike carpet made from other materials, artificial grass won’t ever fade or stain. It is specifically designed to retain its stand-up shape and fluffiness no matter how much rough-housing your gang does in that basement bonus room. You can vacuum it just like carpet or sweep it with a broom to remove dirt and debris.

No basement? Many Bay Area homes don’t have one. But artificial grass is a fun and practical alternative to carpet your sunroom, a man cave, or your child’s bedroom. You can cover the entire floor or cut out fun shapes of artificial grass to make easy-to-clean area rugs. And speaking of cleaning, indoor/outdoor turf is a great choice for flooring in mud rooms and laundry rooms, where dirt and debris usually accumulate the most.

While you’re cutting shapes, make welcome mats or outside and inside your exterior doors. Or pet placemats (no, they won’t eat the artificial grass). Or carpet the treads on your wooden or concrete stairs with grass to improve traction.

Artificial grass is as easy to remove as it is to install on the floor. So you can get creative with it to improve your indoor experience seasonally as well as permanently.

Kids and Pets Want Grassy Play Areas

Kids and pets love to play on the lawn. But sometimes it’s better if they have a separate play area all their own. In the case of dogs, a fenced-in area keeps them contained when you’re entertaining or away, but they can still get fresh air, run around, and do their potty business. But how much time would you want to spend sitting or walking or running on an uncomfortable surface?

Your dear dog deserves an upgrade! Instead of gravel, bark chips, pavers, or concrete, give him artificial grass. Soft, fluffy, comfy artificial flooring makes his kennel/play area inviting rather than punishing his body.

You benefit, too. Artificial grass looks great. It stays cleaner and drier. It doesn’t produce mud or debris that can be tracked into your house. And it’s a breeze to clean up after your dog.

But why stop there? artificial grass makes a nice, cushy bed for inside Fido’s dog house. If his house has a flat or slightly-sloped roof, you can cover that with artificial grass, too, giving him a more comfortable observation deck.

Cats love artificial grass, too. If you have a kitty, she might appreciate having a grass-covered play structure in the yard. When she’s indoors, does she love to hang out on a high shelf or windowsill to keep an eye on her world? A grassy mat would make that space so much better. And if you’re a home owner with a soft heart for feral cats, you can help protect them by building a cozy, grass-lined shelter for one or several of them.

If your home includes a backyard play structure for your kids – or you’re considering building one – we know one of your biggest concerns is safety. Every parent worries about their child (or the kid from down the street) falling off the swings or slide. Installing artificial grass with Heavenly Greens FallSoft technology gives you peace of mind, because it helps cushion falls from up to 5’. Artificial grass is safer for kids in other ways, too.

Why Artificial Grass is the Best Choice for Recreational Areas

Playing and relaxing in your own space is one of the greatest joys of home ownership. Thanks to replacing your natural turf lawn with artificial grass, you have a lot more time to get outside and enjoy that lawn, not to mention the rest of your yard. Sports are a favorite pastime of virtually every active family, though the sports you love to play most can differ widely.

No sweat. Artificial grass and sports are made for each other. In fact, artificial turf was invented to give professional baseball teams a better playing surface. In the 40+ years since then, it has “grown” into a preferred surface for most every type of at-home recreation as well as professional and public sports areas.

Artificial grass is supremely durable, even under conditions that feature long stretches of running, plant-and-pivot maneuvers, sliding, etc. It doesn’t wear thin or develop holes like natural grass can, which reduces the risk of injury from trips, slips, and falls. It doesn’t grow, so you don’t have to mow, ensuring you always have a consistent surface when you’re ready to play.

Artificial grass drains quickly and efficiently, so play can continue even in inclement weather. And it needs only minimal periodic maintenance to remain in pristine, play-ready condition. It’s a healthier play surface than natural grass, too. Artificial grass never requires potentially harmful lawn care chemicals, it never produces allergens such as pollen, and it’s made of 100% non-toxic materials.

Every Golfer Wants a Backyard Putting Green!

Before the advent of specialized styles of artificial grass, having a backyard putting green was a pipe dream – or a monumental ongoing expense – for most folks. Now, you can have your very own green no matter the size or shape of your yard. And our “greens pros” here at Heavenly Greens can help you create a design that fits your terrain and goals as well as your budget.

For example, you can take advantage of your yard’s natural slope or undulations, or you can make your green more challenging or more level. You can add features such as sand traps. As a side project, you could even build a small pond next to your green. It could serve as a water feature for putting practice and enhance your overall landscape at the same time.

In addition to designing a just-for-you putting area, you can also choose the artificial turf that fits your style of play. If you’re a casual golfer, or you want your whole family to enjoy the putting experience, you’ll want our Standard style turf. (By the way, this type of artificial grass is also excellent for bocce ball courts, another creative way to boost the play-ability of your backyard.) On the other hand, if you’re serious about your golf game, you’ll probably want our Professional grade putting turf.

But there’s more – artificial grass styles made especially to simulate fringe/fairway conditions and to line a tee box, if you want practice your chip shots and/or full swing as well as your putting.

So don’t let anyone tell you installing an artificial grass putting green in your backyard is self-indulgent! It is actually a smart investment. While you’re enjoying yourself and improving your golf game, you’re also increasing the aesthetic beauty of your property and your home’s future value. Not only that, you’re saving time and money you would otherwise have wasted making repeated trips to the driving range or country club for practice. Savvy you!

Artificial Grass is Always Up for an Impromptu Game

Whether or not golf is a big interest in your family, there are plenty of other activities and games everyone can enjoy on your artificial grass. In many ways, it’s better to play on artificial grass than a natural lawn. Among other things, the artificial alternative:

  • Gives you better traction
  • Fends off bacterial growth
  • Is healthier for people and pets as well as the environment
  • Can keep up with the action no matter what games you play, without a dip in performance or gorgeous good looks

Are team sportCreative-Ways-To-Use-AG-Int-blog-2s your thing? When fall arrives, you’ll want to suit up for football, soccer, lacrosse, or field hockey. In spring, it’s baseball, of course.

Artificial grass makes a great court for net games, as well. You can say yes to at-home volleyball, badminton, and tennis, as long as you use the right equipment. It’s not OK to puncture the backing on your turf, but it’s not difficult to find nets and accessories designed specifically for use on artificial grass, with wheels or weights instead of in-ground poles. If you play often, our Heavenly Greens installation experts can implant permanent sub-surface pole-holders that close inconspicuously with caps when not in use.

Whether you’re playing team sports, net games, or you want to create a life-size chessboard on your artificial grass, you can use special paints to mark boundaries, etc. without damaging your lawn.

Of course, you don’t have to engage in organized games to recreate on your grass. Get out there and do some somersaults. Or teach the kids how to do handstands. Tumbling and “floor exercise” style gymnastics are great on grass, whether you’re a toddler or just a kid at heart. And speaking of the little ones, even if you do install a formal putting green, they’ll have more fun playing whiffle golf or baseball on the lawn.

And then there’s yoga. If you’re one of the more than 20 million Americans who practice yoga, performing your postures on soft fluffy grass is sure to elevate you to a Zen-like state. You won’t even need your mat.

Artificial Grass Is Ideal for Indoor Recreation

If you’re old enough, you remember when many homes had a “rec room,” a sort of all-purpose indoor play space. Today, we might call that space a bonus room. But today’s recreation rooms are a lot different than a generation or two ago, because we’ve adapted them to fit our personal lifestyles.

Artificial grass can play a prominent role in making any type of rec room more interesting, more appealing and more comfortable.

We mentioned earlier how cool and refreshing it would be to carpet your sunroom floor with fluffy artificial grass. But what if you don’t have a sunroom? You can transform any screened-in porch into a summery haven in winter. You can use a few simple, basic techniques to do that, or go whole-hog-sophisticated with added heat and lighting. The one constant, of course, is grassy flooring – a must-have if you want to bring the look and feel of summer lawn indoors all year long.

On the other hand, artificial grass is equally at home in a man cave. Its natural earthiness fits in handsomely with wood, leather, sports or similar paraphernalia. Use it as flooring, or install a small indoor putting green just for you and the guys.

And, yes, that bonus room or basement where childlike mayhem reigns supreme? Go creative with grass – on the floor, on the walls, on the furniture. Just as it does outdoors, it offers a safe, non-toxic, foot-friendly play surface, whether kids are playing games or rough-housing to burn off energy.

DIY with Artificial Grass

Perhaps your idea of recreation isn’t sports, but hobbies. Especially do-it-yourself projects. Nothing says “creativity” like making things from scratch using your own tools, materials, and ideas. Here, too, artificial grass is not only useful, it’s one of the most versatile materials you can find.

What kind of projects can you do with artificial grass? You can make anything “go green” or soften a surface. You can turn a bland space into something eye-catching, and make living spaces far more inviting as well as more functional. You can create unexpected decorative accents, indoors or out. Why not start a competition among your friends to see who can come up with the most imaginative idea?

As a first project, you might want to consider covering some flower pots or planters. Or covering your child’s (formerly) red wagon. Set aside time to help the kids cut shapes of turf to stick on the wall in their bedroom or bonus room.

Have you always wanted topiaries in your garden, but couldn’t face the amount of ongoing work involved? Now’s your chance to go wild with grassy animals or whatever you want. You can cover any shape with artificial turf, and it will always look perfect. You’ll never have to lift a finger or a tiny manicure scissor to trim them, and they’ll never need water. Perfect!

In an earlier section, we talked about decorating on your lawn. If you’re looking for a fun DIY project to involve the kids, why not make wooden (or Styrofoam) cut-outs of holiday decorations – trees, wreaths, candy canes, etc. – then cover them with artificial grass? Remember, you can think beyond green when it comes to creating with artificial grass, becomes in colors, too.

We say, “Sit on It!”

Who doesn’t love sitting on the grass in their yard – in the warming sun or the cooling shade? Young or old(er), we revel in opportunities to get down there at grass level for a relaxing sit or to stretch out for a snooze. Since artificial grass doesn’t grow, it doesn’t require water, sunlight, or gravity to remain its emerald best. That means you can install it and sit on it in lots of places, not necessarily at ground level.

Creative-Ways-To-Use-AG-Int-blog-1Just think how impressive your picnic table will look when you cover the benches with artificial grass. Heaven knows those seats will be a lot more comfortable! Do you have a garden bench strategically positioned under a shade tree for me-time? Cover that thing, too, because it may look pretty in your garden but let’s be honest, garden benches are hard, hard, hard. Your derrière deserves better.

Artificial grass is easy to cut, so cut it into squares or circles and sew it into cushions for patio furniture or beanbag-style lounging. Or make stylish take-along cushions that are sure to radically improve seating at your favorite stadium. The folks seated around you will be so jealous!

Whatever type of seating you choose to improve creatively with synthetic turf, you can be sure it will continue to look as fine as the day you installed it for years to come. No fading or stains, even when it’s left outside all year long.

But let’s not forget your interior space. A grassy covering for your favorite window seat will give that alcove a visual uplift and plump up your comfort level for those times when you want to get away and read in peace or simply gaze out the window.

Is That Grass We See on Your Roof?

You want your home’s landscaping to look pretty and lush, but you want your yard to be useable, too. Creatively incorporating artificial grass increases livability because it gives you more – and more satisfying – options. And every option comes with enduring good looks and miniscule maintenance requirements that make artificial grass a smart investment. Artificial grass gives you more ways to improve your yard and more ways to enjoy it.

We noted earlier how easy and practical it is to cover concrete with artificial grass. There is no reason to put up with a patio that is aging, boring, or just too hot to enjoy in summer. Even if your deck is elevated.

If you have a tiny yard, adding a rooftop lawn and garden space can exponentially expand your outdoor living options. If you have only an upper-level balcony, you can cover the unbecoming concrete or wood and create your very own barefoot-friendly oasis. (This works even for apartment-dwellers, because artificial grass is as easy to remove as it is to install.)

Greening your roof is all the rage. It looks cool, and it can keep your home cooler as well because it adds insulation without the weight of natural grass. Using artificial grass to create a rooftop lawn is even smarter. Why? We’ve said it before, but it always gears repeating – artificial grass can “grow” anywhere without requiring water, chemicals, or even sunlight. Artificial grass installations drain efficiently so there’s never a worry about water build-up. And, obviously, you don’t have to mow or otherwise tend this grass. An occasional rinse or brush with a broom and it’s all good.

Artificial Grass Is Pool-Friendly

Many home owners here in the Bay Area have backyard pools and hot tubs. Why not? Our weather is ideal, giving us an extended season in which to enjoy our outdoor space. One thing that’s not so cool, though? How hot it can get around your pool. All that concrete coping and surrounding space absorbs heat from the sun and radiates it back on you. It heats up the entire area, and it burns the soles of your feet.

It reaches out to stub unwary toes, too. And if you slip and fall on that wet, rough concrete, that hurts even more. Replace all that hard surface with artificial grass, though, and your pool area will be everything you dreamed of. Not only cooler on the feet, but safer, because artificial grass doesn’t get slippery when it gets wet.

No one wants to slip and fall, but pool safety is particularly important when you have kids – even more so when you’re hosting a pool party for friends or neighbors. Tragically, drowning is the leading cause of injury-related deaths among children between 1 and 3 years old, and backyard pools are a common source of that tragedy. Thankfully, there are steps you can take to protect kids and secure your pool area when play time is over.

Beyond safety, artificial grass is the better choice for pool areas in other ways. It won’t fade or stain due to prolonged exposure to sun or chlorine, and installing it around your pool can keep the water cleaner.

No backyard pool? Artificial grass is still the smart choice, because happily it stands up to the rigors of kiddie pools. Just set the pool on your lawn, fill it up, and watch the kids (and probably the dog) pile in to have fun. Leave it there all summer. The pool can’t kill the grass. And if the blades get matted down, you can easily re-fluff them.

Feeling inspired?

Well, then, it’s time to get creative. Indoors or out, practical or just-for-fun, artificial grass is a dream come true for every imaginative home owner.
