Artificial Grass – 7 reasons why you should go artificial

Artificial Grass – 7 reasons why you should go artificial

Here’s a silent revolution going on in the gardening world. Something of a dark secret…

Something which is popping up everywhere from The Chelsea Flower Show to the Big Brother garden and is probably already in your neighbourhood right now.

What is it? Artificial grass.

Long derided by horticulturalists and green fingered people across the country, it’s proved an unstoppable trend in gardens with a reported 200% year-on-year increases in sales.

And it’s easy to see why – it works, it does what it says on the tin and it saves so much time and effort. There are very good reasons why this is one of the fastest growing sectors in gardens and here are 7 of the best of them!

1. You don’t have to mow it

It sounds obvious but the low maintenance aspect of artificial grass can’t be overstated. No more Sundays shackled to your mower, instead sit back, relax and just enjoy that view over the beautiful green sward.

If anything does disturb the pristine look, a quick sweep or spray with the hose pipe will sort it out. Some people even use a vacuum cleaner on it. There is a recommendation to get it cleaned professionally once a year to keep it in tip top condition and most companies give a warranty of 5-10 years life on the grass.

2. It looks great

Come summer when real grass is yellowing and yelling out for water, or come winter when the real stuff is turning into more of a mud bath with every game of football the kids play on it, the artificial grass just keeps on giving. And if your pets are forever digging up your lawn, artificial grass has the answer. There are specially made grasses for pets, coarser than the standard, which are resistant to the most persistent pet paws. The artificial grass just sails through all the challenges thrown at it.

3. It’s now made to look ‘more real’

In fact, one of the main problems with the fake stuff in the past is that it looks too good, too green. Well the boffins have been hard at work, and now, especially in the premium brands, the aim is to make it look less than perfect. They interweave yellow, light green and dark green and allow a little curl on the stems, and bingo you have a realistic looking lawn.

The premium grass is also longer than you might imagine, some of it is nearly 5cm long, so it’s got just the right shaggy look of a real lawn. And to make sure it doesn’t lie flat the stems have added bounce, springing up after they’ve been flattened like magic.

4. It’s perfect for outdoor spaces where grass isn’t working

Artificial grass is especially useful if you’ve tried and failed to establish a lawn in your garden. Small gardens, shady gardens, areas of high traffic, can all be heartbreaking to a gardener trying to perfect a lawn. The thin and patchy grass will never thrive and once walked on or played on, it disappears altogether. These are just perfect situations for the fake stuff. And then there are the areas where grass just isn’t an option at all. Balconies and roof gardens may not have the strength to take soil and turf, and here, fake grass is a godsend.

5. It can suit all of your needs

Another huge advantage of artificial is you can choose the grass to suit your needs. There are many different types, all for different purposes. If you have pets there’s a grass for you. If you have kids who take tumbles and need some bounce when they fall – there’s a perfect grass with a shock pad layer underneath. If you want your own putting green – yes, there’s a grass for you too.

6. There are pricing options for everyone

There is also a product to fit just about every pocket and you can lay it yourself to help save on the cost. But you do get what you pay for – the very realistic stuff is top of the range and will cost accordingly. And at the other extreme, there are plenty of very cheap imports coming in to take advantage of this growing market.

If you lay it yourself there’s plenty of advice on the suppliers’ websites to help. You may need to lay down sand or rubber crumb before you install it so the surface is beautifully smooth. Like real grass turf, if the fake lawn is laid on an uneven surface it will always be wobbly – better to get it right the first time. It’s also really important to make sure the drainage is good. The grass is permeable but the water which runs through will need somewhere to go or it will pool.

7. It’s fun

Coloured grass, patterned grass, grass covered chairs or grass animals; all exciting possibilities for your garden. You can even have your own designs turned into cutouts of different coloured grass to decorate your space.

Artificial Grass – Is artificial grass really green?

Artificial Grass – Is artificial grass really green?

Artificial grass has come a very long way from its United States origin in the 1960’s. Originally developed for the Astrodome stadium in Houston, Texas (and now you know where the term ‘AstroTurf’ comes from) and made of nylon, it was only in the late 1990’s to early 2000’s that the polyethylene based artificial grass, similar to what we see today, made an appearance.

Thanks to the rapid advances in materials, design and technology, artificial grass today, mimics natural grass and has in many ways, proven a highly viable, environmentally friendly alternative to the real thing.

But artificial grass is plastic!

Polyethylene terephthalate is the plastic used most in the production of artificial lawn. A plastic resin and a form of polyester made from only carbon and hydrogen, polyethylene is as far as plastics are concerned, considered safe. Used in many forms from food and cosmetics packaging to medical equipment, this material does not leach any chemicals that are suspected of causing cancer or disrupting hormones.

What about the infill?

Artificial grass requires an infill in order to keep the pile from going flat. The specific type of infill that you need, will depend on the variety of artificial grass you have installed, as well as whether pets will be using the lawn too.

Rubber crumb infill, which is essentially a recycled material made from used vehicle tyres, has raised some serious health concerns in the past. With advances in technology however, there are many other options available that are neither dangerous for our health, and which do the job even better.

Lawn is not natural.

Beautifully manicured, rolling green lawns are very much man-made. As we know, achieving the perfect lawn requires a lot of time and effort, as well as chemicals and water.

In nature, grasses undergo a growth and renewal cycle that works in sync with the natural habitat. This cycle includes the required water retention and natural composting required for the grass to survive.

Lawn on the other hand, is often a hybrid grass that is neither indigenous, nor entirely suited to the region in which it grows and therefore needs additional water and nutrients in order to thrive. This is why lawns have often been referred to as ‘green deserts’ on account of their disproportionate reliance on natural resources.

Artificial grass is for this reason, an eco-friendly choice. It provides the look and functionality that people want, while having the least impact on the environment.

All those chemicals!

While lawn maintenance such as top dressing is a more natural way to keep lawns looking great, the perfect green lawn, requires chemical fertiliser and a range of pesticides for it to keep looking lush and vibrant all year round. These chemicals and pesticides leach into the ground and negatively impact local aquatic, insect, bird and other wildlife species.

Turf grass provides virtually no habitat for pollinators and other animals and plants that make up a healthy, diverse ecosystem, so considering this, genuine lawn costs the environment dearly in every conceivable way.

As with real lawn, a artificial lawn offers no habitat for life, however it is far less destructive to the environment. You get the colour and look you want all year round, without the chemicals, pesticides and wastage of water.

How about the environmental cost of manufacture?

When it comes to considering the eco-friendliness of anything, one must always take longevity into account. The manufacture of artificial grass, as with the manufacture of anything, does have its impact on the environment, however, considering the fact that a professionally installed and good quality artificial lawn will last up to 20 years, this is an investment with a far smaller environmental footprint over that 20-year period, than that of a genuine lawn.

For anyone wanting or needing a beautiful, lush green lawn, today’s artificial lawn options provide a healthy, environmentally responsible alternative. To get the best service from your artificial lawn, it is essential that it should be professionally installed.

With artificial grass options to suit every lawn application, we can help you whether you need a commercial, or residential installation.

Artifical Grass – Is it safe for Children?

Artifical Grass – Is it safe for Children?

Get Natural Looking, Quality Artificial Grass that Is child friendly

There is so many artificial grass products on the market and it is so difficult to choose one that is child friendly. Parents today are more conscious of health and safety both at home and at school. Child playing areas take a lot of wear and tear; this is where a child friendly artificial lawn comes into its own.

Quality Artificial Grass can withstand a lot of heavy traffic and it doesn’t flatten down as you might expect. Instead it bounces back to its original form once given a quick brush. It is important to install an artificial grass product with a taller pile height as this will cushion the impact should a child falls or jumps from a jungle gym onto the artificial grass area. Most companies and an sand or rubber infill on the grass but at perfect Grass we don’t insert either of this as the quality of the grass is dense and thicker than most. Think about this for a second, Company A inserts a Sand infill during their preparation, The wind picks up in Cape Town and all this sand blows into your home or school. Company B inserts a Rubber infill during their preparation, The rubber is toxic and children may want to put this into there mouths. Both rubber and Sand infills are inserted to keep the pile of the grass upright however this is an extra cost to the consumer and a health hazard.

Perfect Grass offers a quality product that is affordable and child friendly. A win-win for both the Customer and Perfect Grass.
